A Hungarian-Serbian border crossing on the Tisza river has been inaugurated in Szeged, southern Hungary. Foreign ministry state secretary László Szabó said the government aims to improve infrastructure between Hungary and neighbouring countries. Szabó said there are a total of 100 border crossings in Hungary, sixteen of which have been established since 2010.

Hungarian Police Step Up ‘Sober Easter’ Checks

Police will carry out a nationwide operation called ‘Sober Easter’ from Thursday to Monday to monitor the roads for drunk and erratic driving. National Police head of department József Óberling said during a similar operation last year, some 26,000 checks found 600 drunk drivers, a rate of 2.2%. Alcohol consumption played a part in 10% of the accidents last year, he said.

The new generation of mobile radar units are far more efficient than their predecessors, and speeding is not the only thing they can detect. Hungarian police have released footage of a foreign driver accelerating past 330kph (205mph) in his Lamborghini Huracan on Hungary’s M7 motorway last September. Although thankfully no fatalities resulted from the crash, the 36-year-old driver of the foreign-registered car faces charges of reckless driving and endangerment and his passenger suffered serious injuries.
