Budapest Mayor: Migrant Situation Becoming Unmanageable

The metropolitan council has made every effort to handle illegal migrants humanely but the situation, especially near Budapest’s Keleti railway station, is becoming unmanageable, Mayor István Tarlós said. The mayor welcomed and expressed support for the government’s plans to have parliament pass in a fast-track procedure stricter regulations affecting migration in the penal code.

Hungarian immigration office (BÁH) data indicates there are around 200 children staying at refugee reception centres, the daily Magyar Nemzet reported. BÁH said 158 of the children are of school age, while 47 of them should be starting kindergarten in September. Out of all the reception centres, the one in Debrecen has the most children, a total of 70, BÁH told the paper.

The demonstration was organised by the interest-protection association of grape growers who say cheap Italian imports make it impossible for Kunság winemakers to survive in the market.
