Hungarian Foreign Minister Blames “Irresponsible Statements”, “EU’s Failed Policy” For Night’s Chaos
Events in Hungary on Friday night were the result of the European Union’s failed immigration policy and irresponsible statements by European politicians, Hungary’s foreign minister said in Luxembourg before an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on Saturday. Péter Szijjártó said Hungary had registered migrants who left its territory on Friday night and would continue to observe the EU’s rules.

Szijjártó said the refugees and the migrants had become increasingly aggressive, and rejected cooperation with the authorities and registration.

They also refused to go to a refugee camp, and under EU rules the authorities could not force them to do so, he added. He called the Schengen Agreement a cornerstone of EU regulations, one that all member states should abide by.

The minister insisted that a smear campaign has been waged against Hungary, which, in turn, has been attempting to enforce EU rules.

Referring to Greece, he said it was “unacceptable” that unregistered immigrants were arriving at the Hungarian border, who have already been in another EU country.

Szijjártó insisted that until EU politicians started making “misleading or misunderstood statements”, migrants in Hungary had been expressly cooperative.

Afterwards, however, they made it impossible for Hungary to uphold EU regulations and they refused to cooperate with the Hungarian authorities.
