The National Bank overstepped its authority by handing over confidential data to the IMF, the State Audit Office (ASZ) said, firing the latest shot in a recent dispute between the two institutions. In response, MNB governor Andras Simor said on ATV Wednesday that the central bank had not violated any rules in handing over the data at the request of the IMF.

Hungary's dollar-denominated bond issue lowers the risk that the government will tap the central bank’s foreign-currency reserves, London-based analysts said, after Hungary issued five- and ten-year bonds to a total value of $3.25 billion last Tuesday. The issue practically rules out a loan agreement with the IMF, they remarked, while noting that an IMF loan would have carried much lower yields.

IMF external relations director Gerry Rice firmly rejected reports that the IMF plans to close its Budapest office, at a press briefing in Washington on Thursday. Mihály Varga, the minister without portfolio in charge of IMF negotiations, responded to the rumour by saying the cabinet had not received any official notification from the IMF.
