IMF Not Planning To Close Budapest Office
IMF external relations director Gerry Rice firmly rejected reports that the IMF plans to close its Budapest office, at a press briefing in Washington on Thursday. Mihály Varga, the minister without portfolio in charge of IMF negotiations, responded to the rumour by saying the cabinet had not received any official notification from the IMF.

If such a report were true, he continued, it would indicate that the IMF – like the Hungarian government – wants to reassess the state of affairs that has evolved related to the credit talks with Hungary.

Varga said a new situation has evolved in economic policy following Tuesday’s successful bond issue, which the cabinet will evaluate before deciding in a few weeks whether to continue talks with the IMF and EU.
