I helped offer a Christmas lunch to the least well-off in Budapest today. It was the best thing I’ve done since I arrived here. The Hungarian Interchurch Aid organisation ran the event, with support from local companies, and I went down with a small group from the Embassy to do what we could to contribute.

Police are closing a 14-year-old inquiry into assassination of media baron János Fenyo. Fenyo was assassinated in Budapest on February 11, 1998. The two main suspects were Slovak nationals Jozef Rohac, suspected of killing Fenyo, and Ladislav Trnka, suspected of driving the car with Rohac.

On December 10-12, Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Brent Hartley visited Budapest for discussions with Hungarian government officials, civil society representatives and business leaders. This is DAS Hartley's first visit to Hungary and is part of a larger introductory visit to the region that also includes stops in Slovakia and Austria.
