NMHH To Announce New Frequency Tenders In Hungary Next Year
Media and communications authority NMHH yesterday announced plans for an auction of additional bandwidth for mobile phone operators next year. The aim is to boost mobile-phone coverage, as growth in mobile-internet usage is behind that of the EU average and the service is not accessible to 40% of the population, NMHH officials told on a conference.

The media authority plans to open up the 800MHz and 2600MHz frequencies for sale, which will become available once the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting is completed.

The NMHH continues to argue for the entry of a fourth mobile phone operator to the Hungarian market.

Courts earlier this year annulled the tender for the 900MHz mobile-phone frequency, which was awarded to state-owned MPVI Mobil.

A fourth mobile operator would lead to improved services and stir up competition, the media authority contends.

Incumbent operators welcomed plans to boost bandwidth to speed up the spread of mobile-internet services and asked for fair and equal conditions in regulations should a new player enter the market.

They urged the NMHH to take into account the latest taxes on telecoms companies when setting concession fees and not to lose sight of broadband internet investments.
