Not so long ago, I interviewed the son of the great Hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó. The musician had escaped to the United States with his family in 1956. His brother had already told me they had embraced America and its culture with open arms and turned their back on “Hungarianness.”

Eight bridges span the Danube in Budapest linking Buda and Pest, each with a fascinating tale to tell. The oldest is the famous Chain Bridge, which was opened for public traffic in 1849. Nowadays, each bridge has a totally different character and style.

Some may be surprised to know Hungary’s capital is only 143 years young today, as Buda, Pest and Óbuda all merged into a single city on 17 November 1873.
