In the afternoon, 39.6C was registered in northern Budapest, breaking the previous record of 38.7C measured in 2017.

Hungary early-morning heat record broken on Friday

Only the early-morning heat record was broken in Hungary on Friday, according to weather service HugaroMet.

At the capital's Lagymanyos station, the temperature dropped to just 27.2 degrees Celsius overnight, breaking the national and Budapest record for the highest minimum temperature for Aug 7, the service said on its website.

The previous national record for the highest minimum temperature on this date was 24.3 C, measured in Kab-hegy in 2015, while the previous Budapest record of 23.5 C was set in Lagymanyos in 2013, the statement said.

The night and early morning brought little relief across most of the country on Friday, with temperatures remaining above 25 C even during the coolest hours, HungaroMet said.

Earlier: Heat Records Broken in Budapest on Sunday

Early morning and daytime heat records were broken in Budapest on Sunday, according to weather service HungaroMet.

On Aug 2, the temperature dropped to just 25.8 degrees Celsius at Janos Hill at dawn, surpassing the previous morning record of 24.3C recorded in 2017 at the Zugliget station, the service said on its website.

In the afternoon, the Lagymanyos station registered a temperature of 39.4C, breaking the capital's daily heat record.

The previous record of 38.9C was measured at the Budateteny station in 1949.

Earlier: Record Early-Morning Heat Hits Hungary

National and Budapest early morning heat records were broken on Saturday, with the temperature on János Hill dropping to just 26 degrees Celsius, the weather service HungaroMet said on Saturday.

The previous Budapest record for this day was 24.8C, recorded back in 2018 at the "Budapest Zoo" weather station, whereas the previous national record was 23.9C, recorded in Fonyod, in western Hungary, also in 2018, the weather service said on its website.

Experts warn that unusually warm nights can be more dangerous than daytime heat because the body has little opportunity to cool down and recover.

When overnight temperatures remain above 20C - known as a "tropical night" - heat stress can build up over successive days, particularly for older people, young children and those with underlying health conditions.

Forecasters expect the heatwave to continue over the coming days, with daytime temperatures forecast to reach as high as 40C in some parts of Hungary, while overnight temperatures are expected to remain exceptionally high, especially in built-up urban areas.

Health minister Hegedus warned against being outdoors between 11am and 3pm, avoiding strenuous physical work or exercise, and recommended keeping homes shaded and ventilated in the early morning while staying in cool places during the day.

He also emphasised the need to pay special attention to the elderly, young children, pregnant women, those with chronic illnesses and neighbours living alone.
