The National Bank of Hungary has said it is prepared to pay 6 million US dollars to acquire Mihály Munkácsy’s monumental painting “Golgotha”, deputy governor Ferenc Gerhardt told public television. Its Hungarian-born American owner, Imre Pákh, wants 9 million, however, he said. The painting is one of Munkácsy’s famous “Christ Trilogy”.

The OECD has upgraded its forecasts for Hungarian economic growth for this year to 3% from 2.1%, and to 2.2% from 1.7% for 2016. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said in its Economic Outlook that exports were expected to grow by 5.7% both this year and in 2016 and the current account surplus of 4.8% this year was likely to rise to 5.1%. The civil organisations Transparency International Magyarország, Átlátszó and K-Monitor together with think-tank Political Capital sent an open letter to parliamentarians to coincide with a conference held on Wednesday on transparency in local government and campaign finance.
