Budapest To Join ‘Under 2 MOU’ Climate Protection Initiative

Budapest plans to join the international climate protection initiative “Under 2 MOU”, the metropolitan council’s general assembly meeting decided. The alliance was set up at the initiative of California and Baden- Wurttemberg by the leaders of twelve regions around the world in May this year. The participants undertake to reduce green-house gas emissions from 1990’s level by 80% by the year 2050.

The opposition Socialist Party has proposed changes to the penal code to introduce sanctions for such activities as the promotion of terrorism. The Economy Ministry has refused all 28 requests from German discount chain Lidl for exemptions from the so-called “plaza stop” law against the construction of large shops or shopping malls. The law passed in 2012 banned the construction of retail units larger than 300m2 until 2013 and larger than 400m2 from 2014, if no special permit was obtained.
