Prosecutors have ordered an investigation into the damaging of the Soviet memorial on Szabadság tér on October 23 by Jobbik MP Elõd Novák, state news channel M1 reported. Novák had attempted to remove the hammer and sickle from the monument after holding a press conference on the square. When police stopped him, Novák began to attack the plinth of the memorial with a hammer and chisel.

Budapest has one less rival in the bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics as 52% of voters in a Sunday referendum in Hamburg voted against bidding to stage the competition. The remaining candidates are Los Angeles, Paris and Rome, along with Budapest. The International Olympic Committee will select the winner in 2017.
