Hungarian Government Publishes List Of Safe Countries

The government has prepared a list of safe countries of origin and safe third countries that includes the Western Balkans where most illegal immigrants arrive from. The list of countries deemed as safe under the asylum law includes all EU member states and four candidates for EU membership, namely Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. The fifth candidate, Turkey, does not feature on the list.

The first tent camps for migrants will be built near Nagybaracska, Borsod county and Nagyfa, Napi Gazdaság has learnt. This will be necessary as existing refugee stations are filled to capacity. Fidesz MP Zoltán Tessely asked the cabinet on Monday to draw up a plan for moving refugee detention centres out of towns.

The Socialist Party plans to transform its former headquarters building into a logistics and co-ordination centre for NGOs engaged in helping migrants, it was announced on Wednesday. Ágnes Kunhalmi, head of the party’s Budapest chapter, said migrants cannot stay in the Jókai utca building in Budapest’s Sixth District because the law does not allow it.

The 40th annual university and college students festival Efott began on Tuesday at Lake Velence, hosted this year by Óbuda University. The festival runs until July 19. There is a time for study and a time for relaxation, higher education undersecretary Zoltán Maruzsa said in the opening speech.

Pharmaceutical company Béres Gyógyszergyár has began a Ft 3.2 billion capacity expansion investment at its plant in Szolnok. Half of the costs, Ft 1.6 billion, will be covered by the state, Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó announced. Béres will increase its production area to 1,600m2 and its warehouse storage space by 400m2, in addition to installing new technology in the plant.
