Hungary’s natural population decline grew in the first nine months of the year as the number of births edged down by 1.2% and the number of deaths was up by 5.9% compared with the same period last year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported.

Electronic goods retailer Extreme Digital was the first to introduce Black Friday to Hungary in 2014, seen as a kick-off to the holiday season. Some stores set November 17, while others November 24 as the date for big discounts. Hungarian online retailers are already claiming a record daily turnover in Black Friday sales this year, according to the retail association OKSZ.

The Central Statistical Office’s (KSH) “micro census”, conducted a year ago, has recorded the lowest number of children and the greatest elderly population in the history of such surveys, KSH reported on Monday. In 2016, Hungary had some 1.4 million children under 15, compared to nearly 2.3 million after WWII.
