Béla Bartók and Polish culture will be central elements of the Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival held between Oct. 7 and 23, the head of the organising committee said. The festival, the largest of its kind in central and eastern Europe, will also feature events commemorating the 60th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet revolution, Csaba Káel said.

Zoltán Balog, Hungary’s human resources minister, attended a ceremony marking the upcoming anniversary of the 1956 anti-Soviet revolution at Berlin’s Konzerthaus. At the ceremony organised by the Hungarian Embassy, the minister thanked Germany for its solidarity with the people who fled Hungary after the failed uprising.

Good Friday is to be declared a non-working holiday in Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced at the 1956 memorial meeting of the synod of Hungarian Reformed Churches on Friday. Orbán said next year’s 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation in Europe would be the right time to help believers celebrate Good Friday by declaring it a non-working holiday.

Tarlós prepared plans with the local mayor Denis Coderre to sign a twinning agreement between their cities next year.
