Népszava can survive for only two more months because its Swiss owner TGD Intermedia has informed the editorial staff that it cannot finance the 140-year-old newspaper any longer. Editor Péter Németh told reporters on Tuesday that the left-wing daily needs another 10,000 subscribers or an additional Ft 10-15 million a month to ensure its survival.

Government Spokesman András Giró-Szász criticised Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), for calling Fidesz an anti- European and populist party. Gabriel called on the conservative forces to make it clear that anti-EU and populist right-wing parties, such as Fidesz and Forza Italia, have no place in the European People’s Party.

On May 25 Hungary will hold its election for the European Parliament. The government party opted to hold the national election on April 6 and a separate EP election seven weeks later. There was nothing that would have prevented the authorities from holding both elections on May 25, but such an arrangement wasn’t deemed advantageous to the governing party.

Exactly 19 of the 199 members of Hungary's new parliament are women. That comes to 9.5 percent, a ratio that speaks for itself. Looking for an adjective to describe the situation I thought of ridiculous, untenable and infuriating but finally settled for humiliating as the word that best describes what I feel when thinking of this 9.5 percent ratio.
