Fully 33% of home purchases in the capital in April were made for investment purposes, essentially the same as last April’s ratio, data from real estate broker Duna House shows. Investors who bought homes in the capital paid on average 24.6 million forints (EUR 78,500) for a 61 square metre flat in April 2016. First-time home buyers accounted for 22% of transactions in the capital.

The number of home building permits issued in Hungary in the first quarter rose by an annual 100.1% to 4,765, data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. The number of home building permits issued in Budapest rose by 78% to 1,280. In county seats and cities with over 50,000 residents, the number climbed 145% to 1,296.

The death rate in Hungary is the fifth highest in the European Union and 70 percent higher than the EU average, a fresh report published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) shows. Fully 127,000 people died in Hungary in 2013 compared with 107,000 in Portugal and 109,000 in the Czech Republic, two countries with smaller populations than Hungary, KSH said in its Hungary 2015 report.

Hungary’s average unemployment rate was 6.0% in January-March, down from 6.1% in the previous three-month period, the Central Statistical Office reported. The unemployment rate was down from 7.8% in the same period a year earlier. The number of unemployed averaged 272,800 in January-March.
