Health Authority Warns of Rise in Hepatitis A Cases in Hungary
Hungary’s National Health Centre (NNGYK) has warned of the continued spread of hepatitis A, advising hand-washing as the best form of prevention.

Similarly to other countries in the region, such as Austria, Czechia and Slovakia, the number of registered hepatitis A cases has also risen in Hungary this year, the NNGYK said in a statement.

Fully 1,648 cases were reported in Hungary by Nov 19, with most infections detected in Budapest, followed by Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen and Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg counties Fifty-six percent of those infected were men and 44 percent women. Infections were detected most frequently among children aged 3-14.

Four adults with chronic underlying illnesses have died as a result of contracting the virus, the statement said.

Many who contract the infection remain symptom-free but can still transmit the virus, they said, adding that the average incubation period is one month.

The NNGYK underlined the importance of hand-washing and good personal hygiene in preventing the spread of the virus. Hepatitis A is primarily transmitted through food or water contaminated by the virus, they said, noting that the risk of infection is greater in places with poor hygiene.

Close contacts of those infected with hepatitis A can get vaccinated against the virus free of charge, the statement said.
