The cabinet at its meeting on Wednesday will consider the option of introducing further sanctions against illegal taxi services, and it will also examine whether the taxi payment system should be electronically connected to the tax office, the National Development Ministry said on Tuesday, reacting to news of a demonstration held in Budapest by taxi drivers against Uber.

The government is introducing a new sanction against illegal providers of taxi services, the development ministry said. As of March 11, parties found to be providing dispatcher services without a permit may be fined 300,000 forints (EUR 971), the ministry told MTI.

Head of the transport department at the Budapest Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Zoltán Dudás, called Uber “dangerous” because it highlights how income can be made tax-free. He added that once Uber destroys Hungarian businesses services would become much dearer. Taxi company Főtaxi said it would sign the joint statement issued by taxi professional associations and unions.
