Wage increases will help strengthen the middle class and Hungary’s economy as a whole in the long term, state secretary Csaba Dömötör said. Hungary’s grey economy has been shrinking over the past 13 years to total about 6.5-7 billion forints (EUR 21-22m) last year, Sámuel Ágoston Mráz, chief executive of the Nézőpont Institute, said, citing fresh data. In 2003 the size of the grey economy was estimated at 25% of gross domestic product (GDP) and this fell to 23.3% in 2010 and 21.9% in 2015, he said.

Pénzügykutató expects Hungary’s GDP growth rate to slow to 2.2% this year from 3.1% in 2015, due to dropping investments, before accelerating to 3% next year, the economic research company said in a forecast. Performance in the first half of this year has made it clear that growth will grind to a halt as soon as the inflow of EU funding stops, the researchers said.
