According to The Sacramento Bee, György Soros donated one million dollars to an organization campaigning for the legalization. Furthermore, Soros himself published a longer article in the Wall Street Journal, explaining his reasons for promoting the case.

The Swedish diplomat gave shelter for Hungarian Jews in the building of the British Embassy (Hazai Bank at that time).
