Sales of unhealthy food slapped with a fat tax have fallen dramatically, the daily Népszava said on Tuesday. The price of products targeted by the tax has risen by 29 percent, the paper said, citing a study published by the National Institute of Health Development.

The tax on foods deemed unhealthy brought in Ft 15 billion as of July 31 following its launch in September last year, the tax and customs authority NAV announced. A total of Ft 1.7 billion was collected in July and Ft 1.8 billion in June. The 2012 revenue target is Ft 20 billion. The tax generated Ft 4.7 billion last year, falling short of the Ft 5 billion target.
