UNICEF Claim Campaign Against Child Abuse Reached Goal In Hungary

UNICEF Hungary’s campaign against child abuse has reached its aim and started a public debate about the topic, the international organization reports, also stating it regrets that many social organisation misinterpreted the campaign’s message - see related article link below. UNICEF went on to state that nearly 30 000 children over the last 5 years became victims of violence in Hungary.

Hungarian unit of UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, recently launched a video campaign asking Hungarians to donate 1 per cent of their personal income tax to support measures against family violence and child abuse in Hungary. The videos used triggered harsh reactions, saying they are “extremist”, “misleading”, “harmful”, “anti-father”, and “anti-family”.

The US Department of State defined the way migrants and asylum seekers are handled among the gravest human rights problems in Hungary in 2015 in its country report. The report pointed to xenophobic rhetoric and a lack of humanitarian aid, and noted Hungarian legislation passed last year that made illegal crossing a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment and expulsion.
