Uniquely Hungary: Fish Among Other Things, By Anne Zwack
- 17 Sep 2015 4:38 AM
- food & drink
I think the one thing most expats miss in Hungary is the sea, and perhaps not only the expats. Driving into the country the other day I saw on the one billboard blank of ads and propaganda someone had written: Now that we have a Mediterranean climate couldn’t we have a sea as well?
Recipe Of The Week: Pork Pörkölt (Hungarian Meat Stew)
- 12 Jun 2015 9:00 AM
- food & drink
A flavorful stew, Pörkölt is redolent with the fragrance of paprika and bell peppers. It has few ingredients, and is surprisingly easy to make. Save time by using boneless pork chops and cubing them after they are browned. There should be enough salt in the canned tomatoes to season the stew, but if not, add more to your taste. Use best-quality, real Hungarian paprika for best results. We prefer ...

By Liz Frommer: Last Thursday, April 23rd marked the re-inauguration of the Xpat Wine Club here in Budapest. 'Okroshka – Russian Summer Soup', By FirstMed Budapest
- 21 Jul 2014 9:00 AM
- food & drink
My wife is Russian. One day recently, she said: “Let’s have Okroshka for supper.” I was left scratching my head. Of course, I had heard of Borscht, but other than that I really didn’t know too many Russian soups. Turns out this one is quite interesting because of the soup’s liquid base is Kvass, a uniquely Russian beverage. Kvass is a slightly fermented drink made from dark or black bread. The ...
Asparagus Soup, By FirstMed Budapest
- 10 May 2014 9:00 AM
- food & drink
Grilled, steamed, roasted, sautéed or pickled, asparagus is a delicious springtime vegetable with May’s being the height of the ‘spárga’ season. Although we look upon asparagus as something of a seasonal oddity, its rich woody flavor is something to be savored when the time is right.

Hungarians who travel around the world may marvel at beautiful scenery and splendid cities, but sooner or later they will miss one thing terribly, and in many places not find it – a really good cake shop. These exist in large numbers in Hungary: big and small, elegant and modest, the kind that are recommended in travel guides and awarded many stars, and the kind that are known only to the locals.
Xpat Opinion: Heavenly Hungarian Wine, Part 5: Tokaj & Gizella Pince
- 16 Jul 2013 9:00 AM
- food & drink
I can easily name a few wine regions that without doubt deserves much more attention. Tokaj is one of those. Yes, it is a well-known region, world famous even, but still very much in need of an update amongst a majority of the wine consumers. You see, not only are there more than sweet stuff emerging from Tokaj, but the amber shimmering elixir now also comes in a style that too many are yet to ...
