The National Philharmonic continues its series of concerts of dramatic works by Richard Strauss which have never or only rarely been performed in Hungary. The concert begins with a Strauss curiosity in the shape of music written in 1940 to honour the 2,600th anniversary of the Japanese Empire, a work that features Japanese temple gongs.

The guest star of the season-opening concert traditionally held on the evening before the anniversary of Béla Bartók's death will be arriving from Paris. Despite her young age, Moscow-born Alexandra Soumm is one of the most renowned and sought-after soloists today. She won the in-house competition of the Vienna Conservatory in 2002, before going on to win the Eurovision Young Musicians competition in Lucerne in 2004. At her Budapest debut, she will play one of the most popular works in the violin concerto repertoire.
