Despite her young age, Moscow-born Alexandra Soumm is one of the most renowned and sought-after soloists today. She won the in-house competition of the Vienna Conservatory in 2002, before going on to win the Eurovision Young Musicians competition in Lucerne in 2004. At her Budapest debut, she will play one of the most popular works in the violin concerto repertoire.

The concert opens with the “sad waltz” written by Sibelius around the same time as his violin concerto in 1903, originally intended as incidental music for the play Kuolema (“Death”). The second half of the concert presents two works by Schubert, customarily referred to as the last of the Classical Viennese and first of the Romantic composers. This dual nature is reflected in the two symphonies to be heard here.
