Xpat Report: St. Andrew's Day Party @ The Caledonia
- 6 Dec 2006 10:40 AM
Some of the evening's highlights were a bagpipe musician, a live Celtic band, a party magician, plus an assortment of Scottish "stovies" including some haggis, plenty of fine whisky and beer, and a great mix of international company.
Kiltless guests were invited to wear makeshift paper kilts, however a large number of guests were sporting the real thing. The bar was decked in combination Scottish and Christmas cheer, with ornaments and garlands in the windows and large Scottish flags hanging from the ceiling.
The entertainment began with a bagpipe performance by Keri Gyorgy, who played traditional Scottish tunes and had the whole bar singing and clapping along. He was followed by the magician Panther Patrick, who sawed his assistant in half and set her head on fire see gallery of snap-shots for proof!, as well as performing other crowd-pleasing tricks using expat volunteers.
A Scottish quiz served to educate (or remind) guests of Scotland's various claims to fame. Guests were invited to answer questions about everything from Scotland's geography and famous historical figures to modern Scottish pop stars.
Caledonia regular Terry Waldron, an Irish expat, frequents the Caledonia because he likes the bar's atmosphere. "It's a nice, friendly, relaxed place, and there are a lot of expats," he said. "Good food, good drink, nice people!"
Scottish expat Jock Taylor, also a Caledonia regular, was quite pleased with the St. Andrew's celebration, especially since he said it's "not really celebrated" in his town. "Patrick and Suzy put a lot of effort to make it Scottish," he said. "It's been very good!"
Throughout the night, the Caledonia rang with Scottish toasts of "Doon the hatch!" and "Slaandjivaa" as expat and Hungarian guests alike drank to Scotland's patron saint and enjoyed the bar's festive, cosy ambience."
