UK Consular Information For Sziget Festival-Goers
- 11 Aug 2010 3:00 AM
Valuables
In previous years there have been reports of thefts from tents at Sziget, so keep your valuables with you. But be careful - bag snatching and pick-pocketing are common in Budapest. Be particularly careful in busy areas (including on busy public transport, in train stations and other places frequented by tourists) and keep your money and cards in separate pockets to reduce the chances of having everything stolen.
Emergency Travel Document (ETD)
Keep your passport with you and look after it. If your passport is lost/stolen you will need to apply for a replacement here (you can't normally leave Hungary without a passport). Go to the Embassy to apply for a new one - you will need to bring a police report of your lost/stolen passport, two identical passport photographs, any other ID (e.g. driving licence) and the ETD fee.
Money
If you run out of money, or your money is stolen, you can ask friends and family members in the UK to transfer you money.
Public transport
Foreign visitors to Budapest are often caught out by the ticket system here, and fined by ticket inspectors. You should follow the passenger information notices, which are usually printed in English. Make sure you validate your ticket before starting your journey (i.e. before you get to the platform if travelling by Metro; and immediately after boarding buses, trams or trolley buses). You should keep your ticket until the end of your journey and show it to inspectors on request. You should also note that a special ticket is required for use on the night service network.
Drugs
Don't get involved with illegal drugs - you don't want to spend the Festival in a police cell and we cannot get you out of prison. Hungarian laws on the possession and use of drugs are strict. Don't carry anything through customs for anyone else.
