Hungary's Fidesz May Temper Constitutional Curb
"The motion to limit the purview of the Constitutional Court submitted to Parliament by Fidesz MP János Lázár could be fine-tuned, Parliament’s constitutional committee chairman István Balsai told reporters yesterday.

The Court’s powers to review budget matters, taxes and stamp duties would not, in certain cases, be impeded, as stated in the original motion, said Balsai, himself a Fidesz MP.

The constitutional committee will submit an amendment motion to Lázár on Monday and Parliament will vote on it later in the day.

Lázár announced that the powers of the Constitutional Court would be curbed after it threw out the 98% special tax on severance payments of over Ft 2 million last week.

Lázár reacted by saying that the voided tax act would be submitted to Parliament unchanged, but has since indicated that Fidesz will consider proposals from unions."
