In Győr an aged man died as he was in a serious condition since the spill of the red mud has occured in early October. Tamás László János, head-surgeon and director of the Petz Aladár County Educational Hospital told MTI that the man, who was brought to Győr one month ago after the catastrophe, died after eleven o’clock on Friday. His state worsened several times since the tragedy.
On October 4th near the town of Ajka the wall of the red mud reservoir cracked and the material flooded several streets in the neighbouring village of Kolontár and the town of Devecser. More than 150 people were injured in the catastrophe, and numerous residential buildings became useless.
At the Friday meeting Veszprém County Defence Committee proposed the government to establish a health centre in Devecser. Following the committee meeting Ékes József, MP, Fidesz representative of the region declared that they proposed to establish a center, so the health of the people in the region affected by the red mud can be surveyed and satisfactory answers can be given to ”certain news” on poisoned soil, air and cancer.
The MP, who is also a member in the Salvaging Committee, noted that the concentration of the powder flying in the region does not exceed the healthy limit values, drinking water is not polluted, and all the necessary steps are being taken to bring the area back to its normal life.
