Following a decision by the Budapest city council, the section previously used for parking has been closed to traffic.
The project will also add 15 trees and nearly 160m2 of new green space.
Mayor of the district Péter Niedermüller said the site has already been handed over to the contractor, with works scheduled to be completed in two phases within 120 days.
Plans include resurfacing roads and pavements, levelling public spaces and redesigning the junction of Madách Imre út and Rumbach Sebestyén utca to improve accessibility.
Located at the gateway between bustling Deák Ferenc Square and the start of the lively Gozsdu Udvar, Madách tér has long served as a natural meeting point in downtown Budapest.
Framed by striking early 20th-century architecture, the square opens like a grand urban passage toward the historic Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its elegant façades and cultural landmarks.
In recent years, Madách tér has evolved into a more people-focused space, where cafés spill onto the pavement and locals, expats and visitors alike linger throughout the day.
Its transformation reflects a broader shift in Budapest toward reclaiming central areas from traffic and giving them back to pedestrians, adding a more relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere to the heart of the city.
