Reading Comprehension Improves In Hungary
"The reading and text comprehension of 15-year-old pupils in Hungary have improved since 2000, according to 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) data made public on Tuesday.

The results place Hungary in the middle of the field among the 65 developed countries examined.

These are the first results to show progress in Hungary since Hungary began taking part in the test in 2000, Népszabadság notes.

Education state secretary Rózsa Hoffmann acknowledged at a press briefing on Tuesday that the PISA results are important, but said one can also rely on other data when analysing the efficiency of education systems.

She told Inforádió that students’ performance in applying mathematics and natural sciences are average or below the international average.

Education committee chairman Zoltán Pokorni of Fidesz said the PISA results indicate the success of the policy of the first Orbán cabinet, as the pupils who were gauged began their studies in 2000. Pokorni was education minister in that cabinet."
