Press Statement By The U.S. Embassy In Budapest
"On February 23-25, Representative Dan Burton (R-IN) led a delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives to Budapest, Hungary. While in Hungary, the delegation met with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi, members of parliament, government officials, civil society representatives, leaders of religious organizations and the American Chamber of Commerce.

The delegation had useful discussions on the current economic difficulties facing Europe, the effect they are having on the Hungarian economy and measures that the government has taken in response. The delegation highlighted the importance of the U.S.-European economic and trade relationship and encouraged the government to maintain a pro-investor, pro-business environment.

The delegation inquired into domestic reforms that the government has undertaken over the last year and a half, including on the administration of churches. The delegation underscored the principle of equal treatment for all religious organizations which is a core value for the United States.

The delegation also expressed appreciation for Hungary's contributions to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and to NATO missions in the Balkans.

In commemoration of the Raoul Wallenberg centenary, the delegation participated in a ceremony at the Raoul Wallenberg monument in Budapest along with Hungarian officials and clergy.

The delegation consisted or Representative Dan Burton (R-IN), Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Representative Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL) and Representative Frederica Wilson (D-FL)."
