Powers of Tax Authority in Hungary to be Expanded via Magyar Call to Orbán?
- 28 Apr 2026 6:16 AM
In a video on Facebook posted on Monday, Magyar said that National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) had not denied reports that it had suspended several multi-billion-forint transfers linked to Antal Rogan's circle on suspicion of money laundering. Referring to Prime Minister Viktor Orban's so-called national system of cooperation (NER), he added that the authorities had since frozen accounts held by "strawmen connected to the NER system".
However, current regulations only allow NAV to suspend transfers for four days, extendable by three, and freeze funds only if police launch an investigation, Magyar noted.
He urged NAV's head to file criminal reports on the flagged bank transfers so that investigators could trace the origins of the billions involved. He also called on banks to strengthen compliance divisions and report all suspicious transactions to NAV.
"Anyone, whether in authority or banking, who fails to act in the letter and spirit of the law will answer before the justice system," Magyar declared.
He vowed to use "every possible measure" to prevent the "Fidesz mafia's criminally acquired assets" from being smuggled abroad, reiterating his party's pledge to establish the National Asset Recovery and Protection Authority as one of its first acts.
