Prosecutors Investigate Police Scam In Hungary

The Central Prosecutors Office is investigating what may be one of the biggest series of abuses committed by Hungarian police, based on reports filed by the National Police, Népszabadság reports. The suspicion is that a group of senior officers regularly offered Budapest Police services for cash – for instance securing dangerous or oversize shipments – without issuing invoices.
It was in this connection that Interior Minister Sándor Pintér dismissed Budapest deputy police chief Attila Markó on May 8. Markó was appointed deputy head of public security in October 2010.
National Police chief József Hatala fired István Jánosik, head of the Budapest Police transport department, also on May 8.
The prosecutors office has refused to comment.
