45-Year-Old Pine Chosen as Hungary’s Key Christmas Tree for Kossuth Square in Budapest

In line with previous traditions, the Parliamentary Office has selected this year’s Christmas tree that will be displayed in Kossuth Square, Budapest.

Since the start of the year, the office has received 27 tree donations from across the country.

After evaluating photographs, the staff visited 11 trees in person and conducted a thorough inspection.

Several factors influenced the selection, including the tree’s size, shape, and density of foliage, alongside technical considerations like accessibility, proximity to power lines, and the feasibility of transporting and securing it.

This year’s tree, a 45-year-old silver fir (Abies alba), from Borsod County (northern Hungary) stands approximately 20 meters tall, has a trunk diameter of 50 centimeters, and weighs nearly 5 tons.

The tradition of decorating Christmas trees dates back to 16th-century Germany, where Christians began to bring trees into their homes and adorn them with candles, apples, and sweets.

The custom spread across Europe and eventually to the rest of the world, with variations such as the use of tinsel and lights.

Today, Christmas trees remain a symbol of holiday cheer, with families and communities continuing the tradition each December.
