Calvinist Hymns XI, National Concert Hall Budapest, 30 June
The concert “Calvinist Hymns” has been organised every year since 2002 with the objective to make a concert recording of the hymns and psalms of the Reformed Song Book with the performance of professional artists. This event has become the greatest musical occasion of the Reformed Communities in the Carpathian Basin. Every year a live CD and DVD are published of the concert, so during the last 10 years we have adapted 177 psalms and hymns of the Reformed Song Book.

The concert where the United Reformed Choir of the Carpathian basin with its 370 singers, directed by excellent conductors, soloists, chamber choruses and world famous organ players participate is nowadays attended by both the Hungarian protestant brethren and foreign visitors as well as lovers of classical music. During the event the audience 4-5 times sings together with the United Choir thus a huge congregation of 1700 members sings God’s Sounding Word in the National Concert Hall of the Palace of Arts.

The united chorus every year consists of 15 Hungarian choirs from the Carpathian Basin. Just to mention a few of them: “Kántus” of the Debrecen Reformed College, Choir “Palló Imre” of Pasarét, Psalterium Hungaricum Choir, SDG Choir, Calvin Choir, FIRESZ Cantate Domino Choir (Slovakia), Choir of the Partium Christian University (Transylvania).

Let us mention the famous conductors Sándor Berkesi, János Arany, Zsófia Cseri, Tamás Bódiss, Péter Hoppál, and all the organ players János Pálúr, Csilla Alföldy-Boruss, László Fassang, László Draskóczy, Antal Kéménczy, László Varga and András Gábor Virágh. The soloists of the events were Boglárka Berkesi, István Basky and Gyöngyi Écsi.

Some hymns are sung unison with the aim of helping the congregational and school singing and learning, while the others as choral works to show and transmit the choral heritages to future generations. We still have a long way before us as our wish is to edit and record as many as possible from the 512 hymns of our Reformed Hymn Book.

We are pleased and proud that the CD albums I and II and the albums III, IV and V of the Reformed Hymns and Psalms were awarded platinum and golden discs, respectively.”
