La rentrée is the annual “ritual of returning” at the beginning of September when (almost) the entire population of France comes back from what has often been a month’s holiday at the seaside or in the country with family. Along with school, government business and cultural activities resuming, there is a traditional bustle of excitement, lively conversation and a general feeling of anticipation and renewal.

Before you dig into study, Youth Vote Overseas (YVO) asks YOU to catch the buzz of la rentrée, get engaged and kick off your semester or year abroad by making sure you register to send your vote home!

1. Get Your Bearings

• Voter registration deadlines are nearing! Each state has its own deadlines, so check our General Election Deadline Chart to find out when your voter registration application must be received by your local election official.

• Register to vote/ request your ballot today. It’s easy: just go to Youth Vote Overseas, click on “Register to Vote” and let our streamlined voter registration wizard take you through 4 easy steps. You’ll be prompted for the information required by your state. Don’t forget to print, sign, and mail the form to your local election official! The YVO wizard automatically provides you with this address.

• This year, U.S. voters will elect a President and Vice President, all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and 33 members of the U.S. Senate. Find your candidates who are running for office in your district and research them!

As an overseas voter, you need to submit a new voter registration application every calendar year!

2. Commit to Voting This Year

• Follow up with your local election official to be sure the application was received and approved. You may also be able to track your registration/ballot request online. You can find the contact information for your local election official in YVO Election Official Directory.

• Once you have received the blank ballot from your election office, return your voted ballot immediately, well in advance of your state’s election deadline. If your ballot does not arrive in time, use the emergency backup ballot (FWAB), the Federal Absentee Write-in Ballot (FWAB).
