Invitation: New Orleans Swing Festival, Festival Theatre, 26 August
Travelling the smallest distance geographically but the furthest back in time are Thomas Gansch & The Dixieland All Stars from Austria. Gansch’s name is not only familiar to fans of traditional jazz, as for years he strengthened the ranks of the Vienna Art Orchestra. This big band founded by Mathias Rüegg grew to become one of the leading orchestras of its kind in Europe and was renowned both for its interpretations of the avant-garde and its respect for the traditions of classical jazz.

Besides working with the latter ensemble, Gansch set up the group Mnozil Brass for his own and his audience’s entertainment, giving concerts in which virtuoso brass play is blended with the slapstick physical humour of early silent movies. These two elements are similarly present in the septet dubbed Gansch & Roses, where the Austrian’s partners include the saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig.

A winner of the Hans Koller Prize in 2002, Gansch was put forward for the Musician of the Year award in his homeland in 2006 when still only 30 years old.

With a list of past collaborators that includes Patti Austin, Bob Brookmeyer and Alegre Corrêa, Dixieland specialist Gansch plays one of the earliest forms of jazz in a manner that is both authentic and entertaining, but never superficial. With his seven-piece all-star group, he performs music that was created and became popular in Germany between the two World Wars under the influence of Bix Beiderbecke, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson.
