Disputes Flare Up In Malev Committee In Hungary
Socialist MPs yesterday walked out of a committee hearing investigating Malev's bankruptcy and the privatisation of Budapest Airport, claiming the body has no legal basis to continue its work, as its mandate expired last week.

Fidesz committee chairman Istvan Varga said he had submitted motions to Parliament to extend the commission's mandate, which expires on September 24.

In testimony to the committee, Akos Macher, former deputy CEO of the state asset manager MNV, said the State Audit Office raised no objections to the privatisation of the rights to operate Budapest’s airport, which was welcomed internationally.

He said the supervisory board of the APV, the MNV’s legal predecessor – whose members were delegated by political parties – also found no fault with the transaction.

Sandor Zelles, former head of the State Treasury, warned that the state will have to repay the sale price if it cancels the contract with Budapest Airport prematurely.
