Server-Based Gaming Starts In January 2013 In Hungary
Hungarian-owned WGS Szerver Szolgátó is the first company to be granted a license to operate servers for server-based gaming technology, which will be mandatory for casino operators from January 1. The license must be approved by the Economy Ministry, which has 60 days to approve the request.

The gaming industry is hopeful of a quick approval process, Napi Gazdaság notes.

The law on gaming limits the number of terminals to be connected to a central server run by one company to 12,000.

Roughly 18,000 of Hungary’s 22,000 slot machines were returned after the gaming tax was increased several-fold last November, producing a monthly Ft 5 billion shortfall in tax revenues, the Gaming Association said.

The new server-based technology will allow the tax authority to monitor all gaming machine turnover.

The tax on slot machines will be based on turnover, rather than set as a flat fee per machine. The change could give a new boost to the sector, Napi Gazdaság adds.
