Hungarian Cabinet Decides To Cut Utility Rates By 10%
The cabinet has asked the Development Ministry to produce ways and means of reducing gas and electricity fees by 10%, spokesman András Giró-Szász announced during a recess in yesterday’s cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in his radio interview last Friday that the cabinet is looking to reduce utility costs to consumers by reducing the profits of gas and electricity distributors.

Stating that it is not appropriate for anyone to make money on such services, the Hungarian PM said “this sector is not the world of profit”.

Orbán added he accepts that energy producers should make a profit, but profit should be reduced to a minimum for intermediaries between the consumer and the producer.

He also declared during last Friday’s interview that utility companies would not be permitted to pass on the costs of the planned pipeline tax to consumers.
