Court: Protest Was Wrongfully Banned In Hungary
Budapest Police were not justified in preventing protests outside the presidential residence last Monday, the Capital Public Administration and Labour Court ruled yesterday. The court also ruled that action by the Anti-Terrorist Centre (TEK) specifically targeted those who were protesting against the fourth amendment to the Basic Law, as others were permitted to walk on Szent György tér in Buda Castle near the Sándor Palace.

The court agreed with the plaintiffs that the square had not lost its status as a public area, therefore police did not have the authority to refuse to allow the protest.

The TEK also provided the information that classing the square as a “zone of operations” does not mean that nobody can enter it, only that one should expect an increased police presence.

Demonstrators were preparing to hear a speech last Monday at 8 p.m., against the amendment of the Basic Law and were to call on President János Áder to veto the constitutional amendment package. Áder was on a visit to Germany at the time.
