Amnesty International Fears For Hungarian Roma & Media
The Basic Law is discriminatory, Roma are exposed to extremist, racist attacks and the media are subject to manipulation, Amnesty International declares in its latest report on Hungary released on Wednesday.

The Basic Law narrows the concept of marriage to a life partnership between a man and a woman, leaving scope for discrimination against same-sex couples, the report notes. Amnesty points out that the Constitutional Court had struck down this discriminatory passage before it was reinstated by the fourth amendment to the Basic Law.

It says Roma continue to be exposed to racist threats, despite government promises to act against extremist intimidation and to protect minorities.

The media regulation, despite amendments implemented as a result of pressure from the EU, creates the possibility for politicians to influence the media, particularly state media, Amnesty remarks.
