Hungarian Parliament Raises Teachers’ Salaries, Hours
Parliament on Monday amended a 2011 law on education to reflect the fact that the government will raise teachers’ salaries by only 60% of the originally planned amount from September. The new law abolishes overtime pay and raises the number of mandatory teaching hours from 22 to 26 each week.

News website Index calculates an average net wage rise of Ft 30,000-40,000, or 34%, on average, from current levels.

The base salary is fixed at 157.8% of the minimum wage for those with a college degree and 172.9% for those with a university degree.

The government promises to raise the salaries by another 10% next September and in each of the following four years.

Democratic Union of Teachers president László Mendrey was dismissive, saying the raise is mere window-dressing, as teachers’ salaries will only match the rise in their workload.
