Hungary's PM Orbán Choice To Head Media Authority Sparks Outrag
Opposition partiers reacted angrily to yesterday’s announcement that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has nominated media litigation lawyer Mónika Karas to head the media and communications authority NMHH, effective August 19.

Democratic Coalition MP Csaba Molnár said Orbán had nominated “Fidesz’s in-house lawyer” instead of an independent expert.

Karas has worked for the publisher of Magyar Nemzet since 2000 and for the owners of HírTV since 2007.

She also represented the vineyard part owned by Orbán’s wife against claims made by the liberal weekly Élet és Irodalom in 2005, Népszava reports.

Fidesz media policy has not changed, despite domestic protests and promises made to the EU, as Orbán has nominated an obedient executor of his will, Socialist MP Ildikó Lendvai declared.
