Hungarian Fish Consumption 1/5th Of EU Average
- 19 Dec 2013 3:00 AM
Hungarians consume an average of 4.5kg of fish per year, less than a fifth of the European Union average of 23kg per year. Imported fish constitute 40% of Hungarian fish consumption, compared to an average of 60% in the European Union, Ferenc Lévai, of fishing company Aranyponty, told MTI.
Hungarians eat a third of the fish they consume throughout the year around Christmas, noting that carp accounts for 65% of the fish eaten in Hungary during the holiday season. Between 22,000 and 23,000 tonnes of fish are caught in Hungary annually.
Average fish consumption in Hungary could double over the next 10-12 years, mainly thanks to rising consumer awareness and buying power, he added.
