Hungary’s Fidesz MEP : Third Of Poor In Europe Are Of Roma Origin
A third of poor people in Europe are of Roma origin, Livia Járóka, a Fidesz MEP, told a news conference on Friday. On the basis of demographic trends, children of this section of society will have huge significance by 2040, she said, adding that everything possible must be done to ensure their development.

Speaking before a conference of the Hungarian experiences related to the European Union’s Roma Framework Strategy, Járóka noted that the EU Roma Strategy had been endorsed under Hungary’s presidency of the bloc in the first half of 2011. Hungary quickly embarked on implementing programmes to narrow the social gap. She said that in this respect Hungary has been a path-breaker.

As far as the Europe-wide problem is concerned, she said that the programme to eradicate poverty would affect 40 million of the most impoverished Europeans. Some EU member states are carrying out the programme rather badly and some are doing better, she said, adding that Hungary fell into the latter category.

Observing this to be the case, it was decided to organise the current conference to examine experiences accrued so far, she said. Járóka argued that there must be much broader collaboration and multidisciplinary programmes are needed in the areas of education, health care and employment.
