Socialists Call For Law Changes To Resolve E-Till Bungles In Hungary
Urgent changes to the law are needed to resolve problems connected with the new e-till scheme, the main opposition Socialist Party has said. The government requires businesses to use tills that communicate directly with the tax office as part of the government’s effort to crack down on tax evasion and raise budget revenue.

Socialist lawmaker Sándor Burány told a news conference on Sunday that businesses which have not yet received their e-tills -- despite submitting an application within the deadline -- should also get the state support available under the arrangements of the scheme.

Additionally, he called for compensation to be awarded to tens of thousands of businesses which bought tills early on that were later classed as unsuitable by the government. Further, he demanded that the government undertake to guarantee that no sanctions be imposed on businesses affected by the system’s anomalies before March 31.

According to Burány a decision is needed before the end of the year, and it would be sufficient for Economy Minister Mihály Varga to draw up a resolution. Burány said the Tax and Excise Office announced on Boxing Day that 32,000 companies had gone bankrupt and ceased operating because they were unable to resolve problems connected with e-till purchases.

Responding, ruling Fidesz communications chief Máté Kocsis said Burány’s statements were hypocritical and malign.

He said the Socialists “know very well” that it is in the interest of every law-abiding taxpayer and business to get connected to the e-till system which serves to filter out tax evaders.
