Voting By Non-Resident Hungarians Unlikely To Have Big Influence On 2014 Election
Voting by Hungarian citizens living beyond the country’s borders in the 2014 election is likely to affect no more than one or two seats in the 199-member Parliament, Speaker of Parliament László Kövér said.

The change to the electoral law whereby non-residents get to vote is unlikely to have a big influence on domestic affairs, Kövér told commercial Lánchíd Rádió. But Hungarian citizens nevertheless deserve equal rights and the opportunity to have a say in Hungary’s affairs, he said.

Achievements in the policy towards Hungarian communities abroad over the past 3.5 years have healed the wounds inflicted by the referendum of December 5, 2004, which rejected granting citizenship to non-resident ethnic Hungarians, Kövér said.

Parliament passed a law on May 26, 2010 which eased conditions for ethnic Hungarians living in neighbouring countries for getting Hungarian citizenship even if they had no residence in Hungary.
